Mill History

The Mill was originally a Grist Mill(1795) occupied by the Dole Brothers for grinding gypsum, they shipped directly from Nova Scotia. It was erected by Major Stephen Clapp and Ephram Wheeler. Horace and Hiram Walker occupied the mills 12 years or more(1827-1840)..Reverend John Schermerhorn manufactured cement and earthen door knobs for a short time. In August of 1864 Clapps Mills sold to Baxter of Rutland who reside in New York City. They bring marble to mill for sawing, it being the best water privilege any where on the railroad, shipping marble to Chicago, St.Louis etc. Baxter changed the name to "Baxterville" having all the marble thus marked. Plans for a second mill failed, but continued to have a large business at sawing and shipping marble for many years.
